Set in a remote rural town during the reign (specifically after the declaration of Martial Law) of former President Ferdinand Marcos, Mga Kuwentong Barbero (Barber’s Tales), directed by Jun Robles Lana told different stories beautifully embroidered into a simple delicate handkerchief.

We hear people complaining about how Filipino society has changed through the years.
In most cases, it changed for the worst. This is not a generalization but it’s a statement of something that’s obvious. So obvious that we have learned to live with it. Infected by a spreadiing cancer called apathy, we just let it happen.
Observe the little things: How pedestrians walk in the streets of Manila or some other crowded city in the metro. How children would talk to their parents minus the po and opo. How people fail to dispose a piece of Mentos wrapper or ATM receipts in the bin.
Birthdays are overrated. At least, that was the old me talking. I did not understand how people could spend so much money and time to thoughtfully celebrate anniversaries of someone’s existence. All the thoughtful planning. What gift to wear. Who to invite. A birthday is just any other day.
That changed when I started believing in the magic of a birthday wish. Or more truthfully, when I started becoming desperate for something to come true. Something like making him fall in love with me. This would be the third year since I started praying for this wish.
For him to be mine since I had always been his.
