Tick, Tick…Boom! tells the story of a promising young composer, Jon (Jef Flores). Things will become different in January 1990 when he turns 30. For him, this means that he will not be “young” anymore. He’s reached his deadline. At 30, he should have had kids already like his father did. He should have had sold-out plays on Broadway! At 30, he’s still a promising composer. He’s been promising for years now and he’s afraid that he’s “starting to break the f***ing promise.” His is a sad but familiar story.
This is a very late post but I have to say that this has been one of the most amazing travels ever! EVER! Amiciness Goes on a VL featured Oriental Mindoro last January, which was short and sweet, but my trip to Surigao set the bar high for my travels throughout this year. I’ve been hearing about Surigao since I was in grade school but I never really knew what it looked like. Too bad, none of my teachers told me it was paradise. I should have gone there sooner. I want to go back! Take me back!

My friends and I booked a promo flight bound to Butuan City because the flight to Surigao City is way more expensive. Can you believe that this was my first flight for 2016 (and only flight as of August)? I was excited (since I filed a three-day vacation leave for this) but I didn’t know what to expect. I was just really looking forward to dive in the Hinatuan Enchanted River but this part of the south offered more than that. Surigao completely blew me away. I wanted the trip to go on forever, and ever, and ever.
Blew me away, literally!

I like to try a lot of things. Sige lang nang sige! is also my personal mantra. So… I was scrolling my Instagram feed when I saw the post below on Lifedrawing Setup (hosted and organized by WHOAREMARO). Without hesitating, I inquired and eventually registered. Just like that (thanks to impulsive me) I was registered to a live nude sketching workshop!
The thought of it made me really anxious. Not because of the nudity but the part that I had to draw quickly. I had none to little experience in live sketching. My last fast sketch was two years ago when I was still taking art classes. I didn’t draw bodies and my forte were portraits. Faces to be exact, not to mention it would take me hours to finish a drawing!

Should I push through with this? I tried asking my friends to come with me but no one was available. I’m an over-thinker but I’m always up for a challenge. I’m used to doing things alone anyway.*sighs* An “artist”‘s gotta to do what an artist’s gotta to do!

I arrived late, which was out of my character. I headed straight to the venue from watching Ako Si Josephine. The traffic was awful and I got off my uber before the call time BUT AT THE WRONG VENUE.
It’s rare for me to catch the Cinemalaya film festival because of work and the traffic (mainly because of the traffic). This year, I didn’t get to see any entry but luckily, Pamilya Ordinaryo (directed by Eduardo Roy Jr.), 2016 Cinemalaya Best Film, was released commercially. After work, I hurriedly lined up in Megamall. To my surprise, Train to Busan was also showing, so the queues were way longer than expected for a Thursday night *sighs*. I missed the beginning of the film but enjoyed the movie nonetheless. (Actually, I was more worried for my friend who wasn’t used to watching indie movies).
Pamilya Ordinaryo follows (literaly) the lives of a teenage couple, Aries (Ronwaldo Martin) and Jane Ordinaryo (Best Actress, Hasmine Killip), with their less than a month old son, Baby Arjan. The Ordinaryo family is not your ordinary family as they claim the streets as their home, their turf. Aries, 17, the head of the household, provides for his family by snatching cellphones, bags and wallets. Sometimes Jane, 16, and even Baby Arjan, also participate in the modus. The Ordinaryos are caught off guard when Baby Arjan gets kidnapped. Aries and Jane then find themselves in the shoes of their victims, distraught and desperate. How will Aries and Jane find their beloved baby when they are but the decomposers at the bottom of the food chain?
In celebration of hit musical Rent‘s 20th anniversary, 9 Works Theatrical is continuing its stellar run of musical plays with another one penned and inspired by Jonathan Larson, Tick, Tick...Boom! What’s different this time is that instead of their huge musical productions, like La Cage Aux Folles and American Idiot, 9 Works is stripping down to its rawest, most vulnerable emotions.

Tick, Tick…Boom! tells the story of an aspiring musical composer, Jon. Like most artists, Jon finds himself at a crossroads: Should he pursue his chosen passion or give in to the comforts of a stable corporate job? Pressured from (and dreading) turning 30, his girlfriend and best friend make him consider giving up his dream of writing his musical.
Jef Flores is the “struggling artist”, Jon.
Taking the lead role as Jon is Jef Flores who continually makes his mark in the local theater industry. After winning Best Actor (Gawad Buhay for This Is Our Youth), this guy shows no signs of stopping. I first saw Jef as Bazooka Man in Kung Paano Ako Naging Leading Lady. And, while working as an “intern” for the production, I also got to hear him sing different songs from boyband tunes to the Pokémon jingle during sound check (best version ever!). At that point, I wanted to see more of him. And I did. In his stint as Jesus in Godspell, Jef proved that he is a literal gift from the heavens, having demonstrated his many talents and wit. The guy plays the violin, for crying out loud! So…I am one with the people rejoicing that Jef is in Tick, Tick…Boom!. *cries*
